Fitness in the City

Hi everyone 🙂 I just wanted to do a quick post on how we have been getting on staying healthy so far during our travels! Back home Mark and myself are both quite keen gym bunnies and try and eat as healthy as possible. So one of the things I want to monitor is how easy it is going to be to keep healthy and fit whilst backpacking. Now Australia is quite well known for being big on fitness and you really are surrounded by it in Brisbane. You just have to walk down the road to find numerous gyms dotted about the place, take a stroll down the river to see runners everywhere and even the paths are all laid out to make room for the many cyclists in the city.

So what have we been doing? Well luckily our first hostel (Bunk) was situated about a 5 minute walk from Brisbane’s famous Story Bridge and lovely riverside. Taking a run across the bridge is certainly a scenic route, with beautiful views over the river and lots of friendly runners sharing a smile as they pass by. If you wanted something a bit more hardcore, Mark found a sinfully steep road just round the corner from story bridge called Ivory Lane. Taking a run up the hilly lane sure gets those leg muscles working, I managed it once, but Mark managed it a fair few times! We also enjoyed doing a few high intensity workouts on the grassy bank at the top of the hill involving; press ups, jumps squats, ab crunches and and step-ups (using steep office steps).

Along with our little morning workouts we have found that we have been very active during the day. Walking around the city for hours exploring and carrying heavy bags around seems to be as tiring as any gym session! Yesterday we rented out kayaks and took them on the river which was an amazing experience (and a good arms workout!). Mark nearly fell out much to my amusement and we got some great photographs with the sports camera:

Food has probably been the hardest thing to struggle with in regards to staying healthy. We have soon discovered that Australia is an expensive place so we are trying to save on spending as much as possible. When you are walking around all day though you soon get hungry and unfortunately the nearest places often end up being a pie shop (amazing pies!), a pizza place or a McDonalds. We did a small supermarket shop yesterday though and discovered that Aussies love protein! So we got some bargain pasta and cereal to keep us going a bit more on the healthy side 🙂

So that’s all from us for now, I shall soon post an update on our last few days spent in Brisbane and upcoming plans (lets just say it involves a van, a road and a lovely coast).

Good night

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your blog?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.

Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?
